Project 3 Top Hat Research, Sketches and First Steps

The History of the Top Hat
A top hat is a tall, black hat with a flat crown and broad brim. A top hat is usually made out of silk with a disheveled base. Top hats were worn during weddings and other formal events. Top hats can also be known as high hats, stovepipe hats or silk hats. The first types of top hats were made out of cheesecloth, flannel, linen, and shellacs.

The top hat originated from England in 1797. On January 1797, the first person who wore a top hat going by the name of Hetherington caused quite a ruckus. When people saw Hetherington with his top hat, dogs were barking, children were crying and women fainted. In fact, a police officer even got involved and Hetherington was accused of disturbing the peace.

I chose the top hat because top hats represent the formality of an individual. It also gives a sense of aristocracy for my next project. When one wears a top hat, they can show how stylish and smart they look. It can also give the person wearing their top hat respect.

These are the sketches that I have drawn for my project. I have also made sketches that would appropriately fit the light, midtown and shadow colors.
The font that I have chosen for this project is SignPainter-HouseScript. I have chosen this font because it shows the letters show a bit of fanciness.

I have started creating outlines for the Top Hat drawing that will be part of the project.

After I used the envelope tool, I warped the words so that they will be able to fit inside the top hat.

These are the final result of my hat drawing and the draft of the poster that I will complete for the project.
