Bonus: Navy Pier Art Expo

The series of pieces made by Amanda Williams is called Chicago is Iraq? The pieces were made in 2017. They were made with laser cut Arches paper. The pieces were 30 X 22 1/2 inches each.

The series of pieces have repetition, as  one piece of Chicago is Iraq? looks like the other piece. The pieces each have a silky texture. The shapes are designed to look like Iraq. The pieces each have organic lines. Because of the repetition I mentioned earlier, they have a sort of rhythm in the series. The center of the focus in each piece is the border to represent Iraq and the chaotic lines within.

The purpose of Amanda Williams' Chicago is Iraq? is to recount the infamous comparison of Chicago to Iraq. Amanda Williams' Chicago is Iraq? brings attention to the viewers looking at the series about the neighborhoods that were plagued by daily violence. When I looked at the series, I was intrigued by how Amanda Williams used the chaotic lines to describe what happens in the crime-affected neighborhoods. In addition, I could almost sense that I was witnessing the violence going on in the neighborhoods without having to go there. To me, the series sends out shock and awe, was well as a sense of irony that most people would call Chicago "Chiraq."
