Bonus: Karen Ami


The piece that Karen Ami made is called The Matriarch. The Matriarch was made in 2017. It was made with clay, marble, and slate on wood.  It is 52 * 18 * 5 in

The balance is almost symmetrical. The center of the focus is the heart at the bottom. The color scheme is monochrome. The shape is almost like in hourglass. The texture for the drawing appear to be soft, most noticeably on the heart. The lines in the drawing re predominantly organic. There is also a light contrast in the drawing.

The purpose of The Matriarch is to retell the bond between a mother and her child. When I first heard about the artist's story about being stolen at birth from her mother, I was shocked. I could also share sympathy with the artist while looking at The Matriarch. If there is one thing we both have in common, both Karen Ami and I are close to our mothers.

The techniques I used for this art piece is cross-hatching, scribbling, and shading. I used pencils to make the values of this piece. I used a ruler to draw the vertical and horizontal border lines in this piece. The gradience of the drawing go from black to white and visa versa.

A selfie is a self-portrait photo taken with a smartphone to share on social network sites. A self-portrait is an artist's portrait made by the very same artist. This self-portrait was done by Albrecht Durer in 1500. It shows Durer wearing a fancy coat with a fur collar. It was made with oil on linen wood. Durer made this self-portrait to portray himself as a religious figure. This self-portrait was done by Frida Kahlo in 1940. Frida Kahlo paints herself with her hair cropped. This self-portrait was made with oil on canvas. Frida Kahlo painted this self-portrait because she wanted to stand out amongst female artists of her time.
